30 Best Places For a Low-Budget Holiday

1. Laos

Laos

Laos is often referred to as the unspoilt heart of Asia, and it’s not hard to see why. It’s sparsely populated, mountainous, and has more trees than people, making it a haven for adventurers with a penchant for outdoor activities like trekking, climbing, cycling, kayaking, zip-lining and hot air ballooning. And of course these are all a total bargain in this verdant paradise. Average daily cost per person: 252,193 Laotian Kip or £23 ($28).

Food
Past travelers have spent, in average £9 ($11) on meals for one day. Some typical Laotian dishes to try are Green Papaya Salad (Tam Mak Hoong), Steamed Fish (Mok Pa), Crispy Rice Salad (Naem Khao Tod) or Wet Noodles (Khao Piak Sen). The food can be spicy but not as much as Thai food.

Accommodation
The price per person for one night in a hostel is usually very low and starts at £2 ($3). The best accommodation in Laos for budget travelers is in the form of Guest Houses that generally offer a selection of different rooms (with fan, air-con, double or single) and cost about £3.30 ($4) a night.

Cheap Activities
You don’t need to spend much a day to see plenty of things. Here are some cool activities to try out:
3-day travel on a Mekong Riverboat – Definitely to add to your Laos bucket list – The cheapest tour we found was £31 ($38).
Tubing in Vang Vieng – You can rent an inner tube in town for £5.70 ($7 USD) which includes a three-kilometer tuk-tuk ride to the start of the tubing route.
Entrance to UNESCO World Heritage temple of Wat Phu – £3.30 ($4).
Access on Don Khon island (to see the waterfall) – £2.40 ($3).

2. Argentina

Argentina

Argentina is a beautiful country and you’ll need a few weeks to make to most of it. Tango the night away in Buenos Aires, tuck into steak and Malbec in the Mendoza Valley, trek the Los Glaciares National Park, witness the majestic waterfalls of Foz do Iguacu and soak up the culture in Cordoba. Average daily cost per person: 2,665 Argentinian pesos or £32 ($39).

Food

-Los Glaciares National Park – Probably the best thing to view if you’re a nature lover. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of exceptional natural beauty, with rugged, towering mountains and numerous glacial lakes. The entry cost is £10.70 ($13).
Iguazu Falls – One of the Argentinian natural wonders that you must see. Entry cost £2 ($2.50).
Half-Day wine tour (Mendoza) – Walk among the vineyards and learn how the Mendoza Desert region was turned into an oasis, tasting some of the best wines in the region along the way. Cost £16 ($19.50).
San Telmo Flea Market – Antiques market located in Buenos Aires’s historic center, Plaza Dorrego.
La Boca – Neighborhood of Buenos Aires with a strong Italian influence.

3. Philippines

Philippines

With over 7000 stunning white sand fringed islands to choose from you won’t be surprised to hear that this is the destination of choice for beautifully exotic unspoiled beaches. Boracay and Palawan are the best known locations to find a slice of sandy paradise. Make sure to visit the ancient rice terraces in the north and explore the fascinating culture with its mix of Spanish, Asian and colonial influences. Average daily cost per person: 2,641 Philippines pesos or £43 ($52).

There are lots of cheap activities to do in Philippines. What will cost you the most is going around the island. You can spend up to £13 a day on local transportation, depending on what you’re planning of course, and £44 ($53.6) on traveling between the different cities.
Tagaytay – Whether you want a day trip or a short weekend getaway, Tagaytay is awesome and offers lots of outdoor activities and you can usually do many of them for less than £16 ($19.50).
Bolinao (Pangasinan) – Head to Bolinao if you want beautiful beaches without breaking the bank. You’ll find here affordable hotels and food.
Manila – The capital of the Philippines offers colonial architecture, and the old town is an opportunity to immerse yourself with history. There are lots of places to visit for free and you’ll still find cheap accommodations in the capital.

4. Cuba

Cuba

Home of rum, sun and salsa, head over to Cuba whilst it still retains its unique charm and affordability. Soak up the culture in El Capitolio, see the vintage cars and sip a mojito in Havana and trek your way through the verdant Viñales Valley. Average daily cost per person: 924 Cuban pesos or £28 ($34).

Food

Some of the typical dishes to try are the Empanadas, Pastelitos (meat-stuffed, fried or baked turnovers similar to Italian calzones), Arroz con pollo (chicken and rice), Boliche (stuffed pot roast), Boniato con mojo (sweet potatoes in a garlic citrus sauce), Cocido de garbanzos (chickpea stew).

Accommodation
If you want to travel cheap, you can find plenty of hostels for £10 – £20 ($12 – $24) a night, even in Havana. Hotels are usually more expensive and it will be difficult to find a room cheaper than £50 ($70) a night. If you’re looking to travel really cheap and have an authentic stay, it might be a good idea to try and stay at hosts houses (homestay.com), so you’ll eat and live like a local.

Cheap Activities
There are tons of amazing things to do in Cuba, and lots are outdoors and free!
Callejon de Hamel (Havana) – Narrow alley in Havana filled with lively colorful murals and sculptures made from bathtubs, hand pumps, and pinwheels. Great spot for your Instagram pictures.
Go to the beach – Cuba has lots of beautiful white sand beaches. Our favourites are: Varadero Beach, Guardalavaca Beach, Ancon Beach, Santa Maria Beach, Playa Paraiso.
Visit Morro Castle (Havana) – This 16th-century fort sits across the bay from Old Havana and is a great place to get city views. The entry fee is £5 pesos (£4).
Stay in Trinidad – Trinidad must be on your travel bucket list. It’s a gorgeous Spanish colonial town and the old part of town is a UNESCO world heritage site. You can book an Air Bnb to not spend to much in accomodation. Spend the night at the Trinidad cave club and party in a cave! The entry cost is only 5 pesos.

5. Morocco

Morocco

Explore the souks of Marrakesh, hike the Atlas Mountains, lounge on roof terraces sipping mint tea, go surfing in Agadir and discover the legendary Casablanca. Morocco has it all, and is blessed with a year round temperate climate so it’s perfect for a dose of winter sun. Average daily cost per person: 395 Dirham or £33 ($40).

Food

Accommodation
You won’t be able to find hostels everywhere. Marrakesh is where they are more common and you’ll find dorms for less than £10 a night. In Casablanca you’ll be able to find modest but comfortable hotels rooms for less than £30 a night. Rabat, the capital, is more expensive but you’ll be able to find decent rooms for £35 ($42). Homestay is also an option but there are very few listings.

Cheap Activities
Morocco has a lot to offer and you can do a lot for free.
Visit the Souks of Marrakesh – Be prepared to firmly negotiate for items you’d like to buy as locals will try and sell them to you for twice the price.
Explore Casablanca -The city is a Moroccan jewel, make sure to stop by Hassan II Mosque (entry cost £3).
See the Medina in Fez – Fez is a thriving cultural scene – it’s filled with everything from artists galleries, history and amazing crafts.
Visit Aït Benhaddou – This small little village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and looks like it’s carved within the mountain itself.
Explore Marrakesh – Explore the markets and souks, the beautiful Jardin Majorelle and wander around Bahia Palace.
See the Blue Village of Chefchaouen – Painted in a palette of mesmerizing blue hues Chefchaouen’s offers a thousand photo opportunities.

6. Vietnam

Vietnam

Visit the elegant Ho Chi Minh city, often referred to as the ‘Paris of Asia’, explore the vivid and authentic Hanoi, relax in Halong Bay and for the adventurers out there, scale the heights of Vietnam’s Stairway to Heaven. Average daily cost per person: 938,910 Vietnamese Dong or £33 ($40).

There are plenty of very decent hostels to choose from and for less than £10 a night. Staying in Vietnam offers a multitude of choices, from very affordable luxury hotels to cosy hostels for three times less than accommodations in Europe.

Cheap Activities
There are lots of great outdoors activities to do in Vietnam, and internal flights to travel from a city to another are very affordable (we used Vietnam airline). Vietnam is huge and there is way to much to explore to possibly list everything, but here are some things to have on your bucket list.
Ha Long Bay – Going to Ha Long Bay isn’t the cheapest activity to do in Vietnam, but it’s just too amazing to be missed. There are plenty of options at different costs to choose from. We payed £160 ($195) per person for a private 6-hour trip with 2-hour return transfer from our hotel in Hanoi which isn’t bad at all. See the review of our tour.
Happy hour at Polite & Co (Hanoi) – Don’t miss drinking fancy, good quality (and delicious) cocktails at this upscale speakeasy for an average of £3 during happy hour!
Walk around Hoàn Kiếm Lake at night – The lake looks magical when the lights are switched on at night.
Relax on Phú Quốc island – There are plenty of beaches to explore in Phu Quoc.
Stay at Saigon – Saigon or Ho Chi Minh is a delightful experience, a mix of authentic and modern Vietnamese lifestyle. You’ll find here plenty of nice bars and restaurants. Make a stop at the post office and Notre Dame de Saigon cathedral.

7. Colombia

Colombia

Incredibly affordable, it doesn’t take many pesos to live well in Colombia. Visit the captivating cities of Medellin and Bogota, get back to nature in the Tayrona National Park, visit the colourful colonial city of Cartagena and relax at Playa Blanca. Average daily cost per person: 92,668 Colombian pesos or £20 ($24).

Food

It’s just ultra cheap here. You’ll find plenty of Homestay or hostels for less than £10 a night and decent hotels aren’t much more expensive.

Walk Old Cartagena – The city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984, and one of the top things to do in Colombia for travelers from around the world.
Relax in Parque Tayrona – Combine jungle and secluded beaches at this undeveloped national park located on the Caribbean coast about six hours east of Cartagena. You can also find really cheap accommodations around here.
Explore Medelin – Medelin is a lovely city, famous for its coffee plantations, its flower farms, orchids and butterflies.
Bogota – Bogota’s old town, is a must-wander. It’s where the museums, cobblestone streets, and government buildings are.
Hike in Chingaza National Park – This is one of the biggest nature reserves in Colombia, home to more than 1,000 plant species and 187 bird species.

8. Georgia

Georgia

Georgia, land of rock and stone, medieval fortresses, ancient monasteries, verdant hills, majestic mountains, spectacular caves and rocky beaches. Explore Mtskheta, the spiritual heart of Georgia, visit the fantastical ancient cave city of Vardzia, take in the breathtaking views of the alpine villages of Svaneti and kayak at the stunning Martvili Canyon. Average daily cost per person: 46 Georgian Lari or £12 ($14).

Warm and welcoming, enchanting Nepal will take your breath away. Visit Chitwan National Park home to Bengal tigers, explore bustling Kathmandu or of course trek to Annapurna if you are feeling adventurous. Nepal is as it happens one of the cheapest places to mountain climb in the world. Average daily cost per person: 2,901 Nepalese Rupees or £20 ($24).

Hike in Kathmandu Valley – You must hike around Kathmandu if you go to Nepal. The landscapes will take your breath away and you’ll be able to see how locals live.
Visit Swayambhu Temple – The temple overlooks most parts of the valley giving visitors a panoramic view of the city. If you’re lucky you might spot some monkeys around. There are many other beautiful temples you can see around Kathmandu.
Explore Pokhara Valley – This is the spot to see the Himalayan range and lakes.
Go to Chitwan National Park – Go cycling to 20 Thousand Lake (Bis Hajar Tal) to spot wild crocodiles, monkeys, varieties of birds, deer, and perhaps rhinos.

10. Mexico

Mexico

It’s safer than you’d imagine, also a cultural hotspot and blessed with acres of white sandy beaches and turquoise seas. For the most affordable trip avoid the most popular resorts and head to less frequented destinations such as Valladolid for an authentic taste of Mexico that won’t break the bank. Average daily cost per person: 959 Mexican pesos or £33 ($40).

Mexico is a huge country and you’ll probably spend a bit of money travelling to different places, especially if you rent a car (you can always take buses which are cheaper).
Explore Cenote Chaak Tun Caves – Chaak Tun has the most impressive stalactites formation than any other caves. You can swim and snorkel in the caves. Entrance fee £4 ($5).
Relax on Tulum beaches – Tulum is famous for its beautiful white-sand beaches.
Visit Mexico’s oldest beach town of Mazatlán – There is here 20km of sandy beaches to explore.
Stay in Valladolid – Valladolid is an authentic little town and has a beautiful architecture. You’ll experience here the real Mexico.
Isla Holbox, Mexico – This is a great place to unwind and relax on the beach. The best part is that you can view whale sharks on the island, (from May to September). The best way to get to Isla Holbox without spending too much money is by taking a ferry in Chiquilá for $200 pesos or £7.

11. Turkey

Turkey

Turkey is a big country and you might need to visit a few times to be able to make the most of it. Explore the capital Istanbul, a bustling city that straddles Asia and Europe, delve into the Ottoman and Byzantine history, ride in a hot air balloon over the fairytale land of Capadoccia, a firm favourite of the Instagram set and definitely a place for taking hundreds of photos. Average daily cost per person: 163 Turkish lira or £20 ($24).

Turkey is a gorgeous country, the weather is ideal and there is lots to see.
Shop at Bodrum markets – the Bodrum weekly market is the next largest one on the Bodrum Peninsula. Our tip, go on Tuesday for gorgeous clothes, inexpensive jewelry, traditional handicrafts, and famous kilims and carpets are all to be found on the cobbled side streets or fashionable shopping malls.
Day Trip to Kos – Combine Greece and Turkey! Kos is only 45 minutes boat from Bodrum. Cost £18 ($22).
Try a local Hammam – Get 45 minutes of washing, traditional body scrubbing, foam wash and a massage for less than £50 ($61.5).
Relax on the beach – There is a mutlitude of beaches in Turkey, but the best ones are perhaps around Antalya.
Visit your local castle – There are beautiful castles in Turkey, some offering a gorgeous view of the coastline.

12. Indonesia

Indonesia

From white sand beaches, lofty rice terraces, ornate temples to lush rainforests where you can come face to face with orangutans, Indonesia has it all. Bali has long been a firm favourite but it is not always the cheapest, or the most authentic, option. Now we are favouring the neighbouring islands of Lombok and Java, the beautiful Komodo and Rinca Islands. Average daily cost per person: 545,185 Indonesian rupiah or £30 ($36).

Food

Luxury tourism is really developed here, and there are incredible resorts in Ubud, though don’t panic, hostels and homestay are super cheap options here. You can find lots of rooms for less than £5, which is really good if you’re staying for a few weeks or backpacking the country.

It’s difficult to shortlist the activities in Indonesia, but here are some of Indonesia attractions that can’t be missed.
Visit local markets – The Indonesian markets are full of beautiful fabrics and crafts, it’s really a shopping paradise.
Visit Bandung and its surroundings – Bandung will give you a good feel of the Indonesian culture and it is a great starting point for visiting some of Indonesia tourist attractions.
Go to the volcanoes around Bandung – At about 30 km north of Bandung, Tangkuban Perahu is a huge crater of an active volcano that last erupted in 1969.
Visit Prambanan temple (Java) – This is a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest Hindu temple in Java.
Watch the sun rise over Mount Bromo – Considered one of the bucket list destinations of Java, Mount Bromo definitely is one of the places to visit in Indonesia. You can also hike it for a guaranteed outstanding view.

13. Armenia

Armenia

Explore the nearby ancient fortress – Armenia is the right destination if you’re fond of history. There are hundreds of castle, ruins and medieval fortresses to explore here for a couple of quids.
See the grand architecture of the capital city of Yerevan – Yerevan is the capital and largest city of Armenia as well as one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. It’s a beautiful medieval city to explore.

One of South America’s cheapest countries is also home to the most awe inspiring sights the continent has to offer, from the majestic peaks of the Andes to the glistening Lake Titicaca and the lunar landscape of Salar de Uyuni. Average daily cost per person: 190 Boliviano or £23 ($28).

Cruise down the Amazon in a dug out canoe on the Pampas tour – It’s best to do the same three-day, two-night pampas tour which can be booked in either La Paz or Rurrenabeque. Expect to pay around 1,000 Boliviano (£120 or $150) for the all-inclusive tour.
Hike along the lake Titicaca in Copacabana – Lake Titicaca is a popular day trip from Bolivia’s largest city. Plan to spend between £10 and £15 on transport costs depending on where you’re travelling from.
Visit the bustling capital city La Paz – Located at 3,500 m above sea level, La Paz is a busy, beautiful city. It’s so unique it’s hard to describe and you really have to see it for yourself!
View Salar de Uyuni – Salar de Uyuni must be on your Bolivia travel bucket list. It’s a unique destination home to pink flamingos and its beautiful landscape changes according to the season. A one day tour in Salar de Uyuni can be as cheap as £16 ($20).

Food
Travelers spend in average £11 ($14) on meals for just one day. Some of the typical dishes to try are theveal stew (ferges), roast beef in fermented milk sauce (rosto-misalche-kosi), cabbage rolls (sarma), and sheep pluck stuffed with meat and vegetables (kukurech).

Accommodation
Albania offers a decent selection of clean, good-value hotels and you should be able to find a double room for under £30. There are also hostels in bigger cities where you should get a room for £12 ($15) in average.

The Albanian Riveria – It’s a great place for beautiful stretches of golden beaches, turquoise seas and even a music festival or two.
Visit the Capital Tirana – The city is famed for its colourful Ottoman-, Fascist- and Soviet-era architecture. Pastel buildings surround the city’s focal point, Skanderbeg Square, which is named for its equestrian statue of a national hero. Don’t miss the National History Museum, covering prehistoric times through Communist rule and the anti-Communist uprisings of the 1990s.

Wander in the city of Berat – See the ancient architecture in the 14th century town of Berat; ‘the City of a Thousand Windows’.
Marvel at the sight of the ‘Blue Eye’ – The “Blue Eye” is a water spring and natural phenomenon located in southern Albania. The clear blue water of the river bubbles forth from a depth of more than fifty metres. It’s a mysterious place as no one knows what the actual depth of the karst hole is.
